Kings Peak is the highest point in Utah, a remote summit deep in the High Uintas Wilderness of the east-west-trending Uinta Mountains. Unlike most U.S. state highpoints, it requires a substantial backcountry approach -- typically a 27-to-29-mile round trip -- through alpine lake basins before a non-technical scramble to the summit ridge. It was named for Clarence King, the first director of the U.S. Geological Survey.
