The Jungfrau is one of the most iconic peaks of the Bernese Alps, forming a famous trio with the Eiger and Mönch above Interlaken. It was first climbed in 1811, decades before the Eiger's north face was tamed, and today is made unusually accessible by the historic Jungfraubahn railway, which tunnels up through the Eiger and Mönch to the Jungfraujoch saddle just below the summit. Despite the easy approach, the final glaciated ridge still demands real mountaineering skill and claims lives most years.
