Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams ("Mountain of the Sun") is the highest point in Oman, a rugged limestone massif in the Al Hajar Mountains about 240 km from Muscat, so named because its summit is said to catch the first light of the Omani sunrise. Its defining feature is Wadi Ghul's Al Nakhur Canyon, popularly nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of Arabia," along whose rim runs the well-known Balcony Walk trail. The lower, accessible south summit is reached via a route marked by Oman's Ministry of Tourism, while the slightly taller north summit sits inside a restricted military zone and is off-limits to visitors.
