Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is a striking, glaciated massif rising abruptly above Lijiang in northwest Yunnan, its true summit — Shanzidou, at 5,596 m — having been climbed only once, in 1987. Almost all of the millions of annual visitors never approach that summit; instead they ride cable cars up to a glacier-zone observation platform near 4,680 m. The mountain forms one side of the dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge and is one of China's most-visited AAAAA-rated scenic areas.
