Iztaccíhuatl

Iztaccíhuatl is Mexico's third-highest peak, a long-dormant volcano whose four snow-streaked summits are said to trace the silhouette of a sleeping woman ('La Mujer Dormida') when viewed from the Valley of Mexico. It sits within Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park, directly across the Paso de Cortés saddle from its more famous, currently-erupting neighbor Popocatépetl. Unlike Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl remains open and is one of the most popular high-altitude trekking objectives in Mexico, drawing hundreds of climbers on winter weekends.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
