Humphreys Peak is the highest point in Arizona, the tallest summit of the San Francisco Peaks, an eroded stratovolcano rising abruptly from the high desert north of Flagstaff. Its upper half sits above treeline in a stark, alpine-tundra-like environment exposed to frequent lightning and severe wind. The standard trail is a demanding but non-technical day hike, popular for its panoramic views stretching to the Grand Canyon.
