Half Dome is Yosemite Valley's most recognizable granite monolith, its sheer northwest face rising nearly 2,000 feet above the valley floor. Long thought unclimbable, it was first summited in 1875 by George Anderson, who drilled and hand-set iron eye bolts up the smooth granite. Today the steel cable route he inspired draws thousands of permit-holding hikers each season, while the sheer face itself remains a proving ground for elite big-wall and free-solo climbers.
