Gunung Agung ("the Great Mountain") is an active stratovolcano and the highest point on Bali, its near-perfect cone dominating the island's eastern skyline. It is believed by Balinese Hindus to be a replica of Mount Meru, the axis of the universe, and Bali's most important temple complex, Pura Besakih, sits on its lower slopes. The mountain has erupted repeatedly in recorded history, including a devastating VEI-5 eruption in 1963 that killed over 1,000 people and a prolonged eruptive episode from 2017–2019 that forced mass evacuations, and it remains subject to periodic volcanic and religious closures.
