Granite Peak is the highest point in Montana and one of the most technically demanding of the U.S. state highpoints, rising in a remote corner of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Reaching the summit typically requires a multi-day backcountry approach followed by exposed Class 4 scrambling and short sections of low 5th-class climbing. It has the distinction of being the last of the fifty U.S. state highpoints ever to be climbed, first summited in 1923.
