Browse all summitsGasherbrum IV's sheer, marble-streaked West Face — the famous "Shining Wall" overlooking the Baltoro Glacier — is one of the most photographed profiles in the Karakoram despite the peak falling just short of 8,000m. It has a reputation as one of the hardest and least-repeated big mountains on Earth: the true summit has been reached only once since the 1958 first ascent, and the celebrated 1985 Kurtyka/Schauer West Face route stopped on the summit ridge without touching the highest point. Extreme technical difficulty, objective rockfall danger, and a short weather window have kept it far quieter than its 8,000m neighbors.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
