Gangkhar Puensum

Gangkhar Puensum is the highest mountain in Bhutan and, at 7,570 m, the world's highest unclimbed mountain — no confirmed summit has ever been reached. Its name translates roughly to 'White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers.' Bhutan banned mountaineering above 6,000 m in 1994 out of respect for local spiritual beliefs and imposed a total nationwide climbing ban in 2003, so the peak is now permanently off-limits to ascent rather than merely difficult.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
