It is a fossilized remnant of the Permian-age Capitan Reef, formed by ancient calcareous sponges and encrusting algae, and sits immediately southwest of Guadalupe Peak, the true high point of Texas. This is NOT the granite monolith of the same name in Yosemite National Park, California -- it is a separate, much lower peak in a completely different mountain range and rock type.
