Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain on Earth, was briefly believed in the early 19th century to be the tallest mountain known to science, before Kangchenjunga and then Everest superseded it. Its long, corniced Northeast Ridge and ferocious winds make it one of the more technically serious and historically dangerous 8000m normal routes, drawing climbers who want a genuine, less commercialized Himalayan challenge.
