Corno Grande is the highest peak of the Apennines and the highest point on the Italian peninsula outside the Alps, rising above the Campo Imperatore plateau in Abruzzo. Its dramatic north face holds the Calderone glacier, one of the southernmost glaciers in Europe, while the gentler south side faces the high plain used for grazing and skiing. The mountain has three main summits (Vetta Occidentale, Centrale, and Orientale), with the western (Occidentale) summit being the highest.
