Chief Mountain is a dramatic, isolated peak on the eastern edge of Glacier National Park, rising abruptly about 1,500 m (5,000 ft) above the surrounding plains and visible for great distances across Montana and Alberta. Geologically it is a textbook klippe, with 1.4-billion-year-old Precambrian rock thrust over much younger Cretaceous shale along the Lewis Overthrust fault. It is one of the most sacred sites of the Blackfeet Nation, known in Blackfoot as Ninaistako.
