Cerro Torre

A slender granite spire capped by wind-sculpted rime ice, Cerro Torre is one of the most technically demanding and storm-battered summits on Earth. Rising from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field near the town of El Chaltén, it is as famous for its climbing controversies as for its beauty — a disputed 1959 claim and a bolt-chopping incident decades later both became landmark episodes in mountaineering ethics. Notoriously fierce Patagonian weather means climbers often wait weeks for the narrow windows needed to attempt it.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
