Black Mountain is Kentucky's highest point, a long coal-bearing ridge on the Virginia border above the former mining town of Lynch that can be reached largely by vehicle rather than climbed. Route 160 crosses near its crest, and a narrow spur road — paved at first, then dirt and rock — leads most of the way to the summit, where an FAA radar dome and old fire-lookout foundation mark the top rather than any dramatic alpine scenery. Its low-key, drive-up character contrasts with its turbulent history as a site of large-scale coal mining and a hard-fought 1990s campaign that stopped mountaintop removal at the summit.
