Black Elk Peak

Black Elk Peak is the highest point in South Dakota and in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, rising above Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest. Its summit holds a distinctive stone fire-lookout tower built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, now on the National Register of Historic Places. The mountain is sacred to the Lakota as the site of Black Elk's 'Great Vision,' and in 2016 it was officially renamed from Harney Peak in his honor after a decades-long Lakota-led campaign.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
