Baekdu Mountain

Baekdu Mountain is an active stratovolcano straddling the China–North Korea border and the highest point on the Korean Peninsula, topped by the crater lake Heaven Lake (Cheonji). It holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Korea as the mythical birthplace of the Korean nation (the Dangun legend) and is also revered in China. A catastrophic eruption around 946 CE was one of the most powerful volcanic events of the last 5,000 years; the volcano last erupted in 1903 and remains monitored as active.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
