Backbone Mountain is a 39-mile Allegheny Mountain ridge straddling the West Virginia–Maryland line, and its high point — a specific spot named Hoye-Crest — is the highest natural point in Maryland at 3,360 feet. The summit sits on private timber-company land where public foot access is permitted, and it's typically visited as a short out-and-back hike from a pull-out on US Route 219 near Silver Lake, WV. A stone marker placed by the Maryland Historical Society in 1952 identifies the spot, which otherwise offers only filtered forest views rather than a dramatic vista.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
