It only gained its status in 2004, when GPS resurveying found this then-unnamed hill to be marginally higher than nearby Juozapinė Hill, which had long been assumed to be the country's highpoint. Named after Aukštėjas — an epithet of Dievas, the supreme deity of ancient Lithuanian mythology — following a public naming contest, it's a short, easy walk with no technical difficulty.
