Anamudi, meaning 'elephant head' in Malayalam for its rounded profile, is the highest peak in the Western Ghats and in all of South India, standing well apart from the Himalayan giants that dominate the rest of the subcontinent's high points. It is a fault-block mountain of ancient Munnar granite within Eravikulam National Park, near the hill town of Munnar, with gentle grass-covered north and south slopes contrasting with steeper, rockier east and west faces. Its high plateau and slopes shelter the largest surviving population of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, alongside elephants, gaur, and the endemic Anamudi frog (Raorchestes resplendens). Despite its accessible, non-technical terrain, the true summit is not open to casual visitors: the national park restricts general tourists to a lower viewpoint, and reaching the actual top requires special written permission from the Kerala Forest Department.
